A garbage truck is also known as dustcart or a dustbin lorry. The people those collect the garbage are called known as dustmen. Garbage truck of a dustcart refers to a truck which is specially designed for managing municipal solid waste and hauls the collected waste to a solid waste treatment facility centre such as a landfill. These types of trucks are also known as a rubbish truck, junk truck, bin wagon, dustbin lorry or bin van in other states whereas called as trash trucks in the United States. The trash trucks catch fire very often. This is because when the organic materials break down, they generate heat and other gases. If they are compressed then the gas and heat can’t escape. This is why it’s common for landfills actually to explode.
Some garbage trucks have a standing station on the curbside, which allows the operator to drive the truck while standing. This increases efficiency, especially on a route without mechanical-compatible receptacles, or where the receptacle must be moved to the lifter. These vehicles have steering on the right side of the trucks and it allows the operator to see the refuse receptacle better when operating a mechanical lifting grapple. It also allows the operator to safely exit the vehicle (which they must do if emptying garbage cans that aren’t of the proper design) on the curbside. They have to do this frequently.
The garbage truck is loud for a few reasons:
- Diesel engine powers the truck.
- The truck is in first gear which makes a whining sound when the engine uses more power.
- The crew dumping the containers needs to bang the container against the back of the truck to get out all the trash.
- The truck has a compactor which is used to pack the garbage in the back of the truck to make more room for more trash.

The truck below has both a standing station on the right side of the truck and a traditional seated station on the left. It can be operated from either side.
Smell isn’t a big problem. Only a relatively small part of the waste is bio waste. People typically take it out in bags made of biodegradable plastic which they have sealed by tying a knot in them:
The handling and disposal of garbage is usually the responsibility of the city or region in which you live. If you live in a single house among other single homes in neighbourhoods, the municipality informs residents of the days in the week individual household garbage will be collected for removal and disposal.
The cost of garbage collection is usually borne by local municipalities who can evy and collect property taxes from the owners of real estate and structures erected on them.
